Day 9 - Feb 5 (Friday)
Person of the Day: Joanne Putnam, of Marlette,  Michigan
Joanne is another veteran member of the Pattullo2000 group, she is also the oldest, she is a mother of 3 and grandmother of 4. Joanne is a retired LPN and hopes to continue snowmobiling unil she is really old. She ripped her jacket early on in the trip, and here she is modeling her new one.... it is rumored to have over 42 pockets, although she can't remember were they all are and where she put stuff. She likes giving Eugene and George a rough time.....

Journey in a Nutshell
We left Wawa, Ont. about 8:00 A.M., leaving Tim to take another snowmobiler we met on the trail named Tom from Grand Rapids, Michigan, back to the Soo. He had hurt himself on the trail, possibly a broken or cracked rip. He even made a $20 donation to FAME. Forgot to mention yesterday, we met 19 snowmobilers from the Saginaw, Michigan area, they recognized us from the Saginaw paper. They passed the hat and donated $60 canadian to FAME. We stopped at the Half-Way Haven, a new outpost between Wawa and Seachmont, Ont. (170 miles), Gas cost us 99 cents a liter, half a tank cost over $20.  They served us sandwiches and soup. Even with the high prices, it was worth it. the alternative was nothing. We got into Hayden, Ont. about 6:00 P.M. We ate dinner at the Hayden Restaurant. Their we met Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer Chris Covey, she was very friendly and helpful, she gave us each a ice pick to carry, in case we went through the ice. This device allows you to pull yourself out the water, in case you break through the ice. She also gave George a Snowmobile safety booklet to study. She could provide Michigan DNR officers some personality tips.... also great whitefish and homemade pies at the Hayden Restaurant. Grandma's opening up special at 7:00 A.M. for breakfast in the morning.

Image Trek

Each morning about 9:00 A.M. we stop so George can call into WKYO, AM radio station out of Caro, Michigan. Here you see George talking on our Iridium satellite phone, most of this trip cell phones have been of no use, our only link to the outside world during the day is the satellite phone.
This picture was taken south of Wawa, Ont., standing on top of a Dam, the snowmobile trail ran along the top. It was about 15 degrees out when we took this picture.
Here we are on one of the few breaks George lets us have each day. We rode over 200 miles today, with the scenery looking like this for almost the entire trip. At times the trees were bent over so far from the heavy snow, they created arches across the trail, if you touched them the person behind you got powdered.
